The way we are camping has evolved over the years. Canvas used to be the top fabric for making outdoor tents, however, as time passed, technology changed, and we were introduced to synthetic tents on the market.
No matter the new material, a lot of avid campers still trust these natural fabric tents and you will see why it is a worthy consideration.
I had a chance to camp in and didn’t have any problems with condensation and leaks like in other synthetic camping tents.
Let’s see which are the best cotton tents on the market and why these models deserve to be called as best year-round tents for outdoor recreation.

Unistrenght made a canvas winter tent that you can use for family camping through all four seasons.
Here is a model with a 5m diameter (16.4ft) but you can choose another size that fits you on Amazon. The 5m model accommodates 6-8 people.
It is made of breathable cotton that is treated with UV & water repellent for protection. The floor of this unit is made of PVC that will keep the groundwater out.
It weighs 77.2lbs which is a lot but you should know that canvas tent material is heavier than synthetic fabric and this is a big tent. Transport it with a four-wheel vehicle.
This canvas wall tent comes with a 9.8ft center pole that makes the structure stand. I like the two rubber cups that insert into the long tent pole to protect the floor and the roof from punching holes.
There is a big front T-shape entrance with double-sided and double handle SBS zippers for easy access. The door height is 5.58ft so if you are smaller you will get inside without bending.
Regarding ventilation, you have 4 windows with mosquito mesh at the bottom of the unit and 4 vents on the apex to have a properly ventilated tent.
It can also be set up as a canopy as you sip down the tent walls to avoid stiffness inside when the temperatures are high and to have 360 angle view.
The Unistrength tent comes with a 5-inch diameter jack hole on the roof that has a fire-resistant material around the hole to protect the structure from heat.
When you won’t use the hole for heating the tent you can cover it with the provided canvas flap by tieing it up.
However, the rolled flap can touch the hot chimney which can be dangerous so I recommend using heavy-duty aluminum foil or some other heat insulation material so the flap (and your tent) won’t catch fire.
It comes with 4 inside pockets for storing the small essentials.
- Heavy-duty frame
- Lots of ventilation options
- Jack hole for heating the tent
- Canvas option for breathability
- Heavy-duty SBS zippers
- A rain cap for rain protection
- Quite heavy and bulky
- The rolled-up canvas flap touches the hot stove pipe
- The storage bag could be bigger
Kodiak Canvas Cabin Tent
- Made with Hydra-Shield, 100% cotton duck canvas that is durable, watertight and breathable
- Spacious 6'1" ceiling height provides walk-around comfort
- Two large D-shaped doors (front and back) with #10 YKK zippers
- Four large windows with no-see-um mesh
- Flex-Bow Frame: Exceptionally sturdy. Keeps tent taut. Quick and easy, one-person, setup
Kodiak Canvas made a Flex-Bow tent that can accommodate up to 4 people. It is a small canvas cabin tent (9 by 8 feet) according to the fact that most cotton tents are big and can accommodate a group of people.
The Kodiak Canvas Flex Bow tent is comfortable for a small family with one child or two.
These types of tents are heavier than synthetic tents and this unit isn’t an exception as it weighs 54.5 pounds so you will have to transport it to the campground with a vehicle.
The Kodiak canvas tent is made of Hydra-Shield 100% cotton duck canvas which is breathable, watertight, and durable at the same time. It is a durable canvas tent that can serve you for years if you take care of it.
The 3/8-inches rods are made of solid spring steel Flex-bow for sturdiness. The Kodiak Flex Bow tent includes steel tent poles to withstand the fabric weight and the bad windy weather.
Its center height is 6’1″ so no reason to worry about bending and crawling inside.
This 4-person canvas tent has 2 big D-shaped doors with #10 YKK zippers for extra comfortability and easy accessibility.
There are 4 large windows with no-see-um mesh and two funnel-flow vents that take care of proper ventilation and control the temperature.
The shade is provided by the large awning above the doors (70×57 inches) that serves also for clean and dry entry. A customizable gear organizer system will help you to have things on sight.
It is one of the Kodiak tents that you can set it up easily on your own. When you stake it out you will pitch it in about a few minutes.
While it’s an all-season tent, you must be careful when using it in a mountain environment as it isn’t meant for extreme weather conditions and snow accumulations.
- Easy one-person setup
- Taut fabric
- Four large windows
- Two entrances for easy access
- Awning for covered entry and shade
- Not for snow accumulations

It is a 4 season tent that offers yearly protection without compromising comfort.
The Mesa model can accommodate up to 6 people as its dimensions are 10′ x 14′ x 6′ 6″. It weighs 59 pounds so you will need a vehicle for its transportation.
The Mesa model features a heavy-duty floor that withstands frequent use and furniture legs so you can put cots and a table inside the tent without the risk of tearing the floor material.
Stakes are made of carbon steel that performs well in the roughest camping terrain while the tent itself is manufactured by waterproof canvas.
With 2 large pockets, 2-multi pockets, and 2 overhead storage you will have things organized and on reach whenever you need them.
This one has 2 extra-large doors for easy accessibility, topped with high-quality #10 SBS zippers that have extra-large pulls that are double-stiched-in for reinforcement. They should last the entire lifetime of the tent.
Its mesh screens, two entrances, and top vents offer ventilation but it can get hot in summer so it would be nice if the company includes some extra side windows in this model in the future.
An awning provides a shade and a dry space in front of the doors. With E-port access, you will use the power inside the tent for charging gadgets.
You will set up this shelter in a reasonable time due to the T-1 top bar that keeps the tent tight and stable in any weather condition. It comes with a lifetime warranty.
As the brand doesn’t sell a footprint along with the tent, you can buy it here to prolong the tent’s life.
- Heavy-duty floor

Do you need a big tent that can occupy a group of people? Watch out because you could fall in love with this glamorous yurt canvas bell tent from Dream House.
It is a 4-season wall tent that won’t disappoint you no matter when you will be camping.
The diameter of this freestanding tent is 6 m; giving you 20 ft. of space for sleeping, playing, cooking, and other camping activities.
It can occupy up to 7 campers, however, 6 people will be more comfortable inside with their cots or other sleeping equipment.
Its height of 98.4 inches makes it the tallest tent on the list. The bell tent easily fits 2 queen-sized beds.
This bell tent is made of 0.63 lbs/10ft2 (285g/sqm) beige cotton canvas that has a 3000 mm waterproof level.
The groundsheet tent material is made of 1.2 lbs/10ft2 (540g/sqm) PVC that is integrated and zippable, which means you can have a canopy tent in sunny weather for more breathability and views.
The floor of this large tent has a 5000mm waterproof coating so the groundwater shouldn’t mess up the interior even in the heavy rain.
It is a quality canvas tent that features steel poles and a diameter of 1.5in thickness 2/25in galvanized steel tubes to stay stable in bad weather conditions.
This model has enormous doors and 4 rectangle windows that feature mesh material for keeping the bugs out. Hot air gets out at the top where you will find 4 roof vents.
This yurt bell tent has a stove hole (3.9 inches) available that the manufacturer made in the wall (not in the roof as in the PlayDo bell tent) so the rain has little chance to leak through, which is impressive.
The hole can be covered by canvas with velcro when not in use.
The heavy-duty canvas tent can handle 6-degree wind i.e. 30miles/hour. Rather don’t use it if you expect stronger wind.
It is one of the wall tents that takes some time to assemble the first time (around 30-40 minutes).

- A stove hole on the wall
- Canopy option
- Heavy & bulky
KingCamp Torino Hot Tent
No products found.
KingCamp Torino tent is for you if you intend to spend a romantic camping trip, camp with a friend, or solo camp comfortably.
You will be able to put sleeping mats in and a table with chairs while leaving some space for the gear. This is the only hybrid tent on the list because it is made of polyester-cotton fabric.
The mixed material is better than cotton itself because it provides better strength and mildew resistance, has better moisture-absorbent properties while being more breathable.
It comes with a separate 3000mm waterproof hexagonal 150D Oxford floor mat that will keep the dirt and groundwater out due to the walls.
The separate floor of this canvas tent enables you to camp on the grass which is nice if you like to cool down in the summer.
The Torino tent features a replaceable flame-retardant stove jack to heat the tent in cold temperatures and snow.
What I like about this tent is the snow skirt that protects the interior from the snow and wind so you will be fully protected. It is 5.2ft tall so most of you will be able to stand in the center.
It is one of the lightest tents on the list since it has 11.9lbs but still, you will have to use a vehicle to get it to your camping location as it is too heavy for carrying it.
Its setup is quite easy as you just fix the 6061 aluminum alloy pole in the middle of the structure to have a tent ready for usage.
There are two top air vents that will let the hot air out to avoid condensation while keeping bugs out but I would love to see a ground vent or a window to have optimum airflow throughout the tent.
The doors are wide to enter and bring folded furniture inside with ease.
- Easy to assemble
- Good strength and mildew resistance
- Separate welded hexagonal floor
- Snow skirt for snow & wind protection
- Wide doors
- Replaceable fire-retardant jack hole
- No windows
- No storage pockets

Canvas Tent Camping Guide
Do you want to know more about these natural fabric tents?
The following guide will answer your questions regarding waterproofness, do cotton canvas tents need additional waterproofing, which water spray should you use, do they hold heat well, how much they weigh, are they better than nylon units, and their pros and cons.
Canvas is never going to disappoint when it comes to its strength. It is going to endure wind, downpours, as well as hailstorms. Even curious animals are going to have a hard time piercing this one.
A camping model made of nylon usually lasts for approximately three to four years, depending on the usage. On the other hand, one made of natural material may last for 20-30 years or more if well cared for.
The material is so durable that it is also used in the construction of some semi-permanent structures.
Canvas covers are frequently used over traditional wooden frames and cement foundations. These canvas tents can last for many years and offer a way to keep low-cost lodging.
The fabric is made from cotton, and as you already know by now, this material is breathable. Materials like polyester, nylon and other fabrics don’t allow air to circulate as much as this one.
It is great to have a canvas tent because you can use it for camping in the campground, in your backyard in summer for kids to play, for festivals, different events, and for military or humanitarian use.
Perfect winter tent
Many canvas tent manufacturers include a stove jack hole so you will be able to set a burning stove for the heat and cooking meals inside.
The holes are fire-resistant so you don’t have to worry about the fire hazard.
This is why a natural fabric shelter with a stove jack is a wonderful unit to have when you are enjoying nature while it is freezing outside.
What is a canvas tent?
A cotton canvas tent is a unit that is made of a natural material. In the past, this material was made of hemp, however, the modern fabric is made of cotton or linen (less used).
Threads of duck canvas material are more tightly woven than ordinary canvas. The main features of this fabric are sturdiness, durability, and breathability.
Is it worth it?
Canvas camping tents are worth buying if you’re a regular camper and will be camping in one place for a longer time. It is also a great product to have a backyard party in.
The best canvas camping tents are made from heavy-duty, fade-resistant, and weatherproof cloth that lasts for years with proper care.
Camping in a canvas tent is worth it as long as you know what to look for when choosing your tent so consider this canvas tent camping guide for purchasing a tent that will serve you well on your outdoor trip.
The unit is very breathable due to the natural material, durable, and will withstand most weather conditions (moderate rain, wind, and snow with ease if it is classified as a four-season tent).
Are canvas tents good for camping?
Canvas tents are great for car camping trips because cotton is heavier than synthetic tent fabrics on the market.
Due to their high ventilation properties, durability and waterproofness they are a great choice for base camping throughout the year.
Are canvas tents durable?
Canvas tents are one of the most durable camping tents due to the cotton fabric which is denser and lasts longer than nylon. Usually, canvas tents are also made of a synthetic blend.
Tents that are only made of cotton will either be more expensive or less durable and breathable.
Canvas tents can be expensive due to their durability and waterproofness; however, if they aren’t coated with some sort of water-resistant or waterproofing agent, then they won’t hold up in rain.
While it’s true that canvas is a great fabric for camping tents, not all types of canvas are created equal. Some types of cotton aren’t as strong and durable as others.
The thread count is also something to think about when making your purchase. A higher thread count means a tighter weave and a stronger, more durable tent.
Are Teton canvas tents good?
Teton company is one of the best canvas tent brands that produce outdoor tents of the highest quality.
Tents made by this company are often used as temporary shelters for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
They are also great for camping trips because they offer good protection from rain and weather conditions.
Teton canvas tents are comfortable, and durable making them great choices for the serious camper or hiker who does not wish to spend thousands of dollars on a permanent structure.
Not only are they durable, but they are also easy to set up. Some of the models include convenient side windows for ventilation and very large front doors that make it easy to enter or exit the tent without difficulty.
Are White duck tents good?
Whiteduck canvas tents are great because they are made of the highest quality materials. This type of tent is great for camping, hunting, and any other outdoor activity you may be looking to do.
Whiteduck company offers a wide range of outdoor fabric and canvas tents. The tents are designed to keep you dry, warm, and comfortable in all kinds of weather conditions.
Are old canvas tents good?
Old canvas tents are good if they are still watertight. However, look out for holes or rips that need to be fixed to have a dry camping experience.
You can waterproof your canvas camping tent additionally to prolong its lifespan.
What is the best canvas for a tent?
There are different canvas materials that are used for making cotton canvas tents such as duck canvas and polycotton canvas.
Duck canvas is made of 100% cotton while poly-cotton is made of half cotton and half synthetic fibers.
While both are durable, duck material is more resistant to water; it can even be submerged without damage.
Duck material also has greater ozone resistance than the poly-cotton material, which means that it can be used in a wider range of weather conditions.
Some people claim that the poly-cotton canvas is more breathable than duck material, but this has not been scientifically proved.
Are canvas tents waterproof?
The majority of canvas tents are waterproof by a tent manufacturer’s standard.
This is because the fabric of the tents is made to be water-resistant and even waterproof by nature, but tent seams can allow for some leakage and seepage over time and through repeated use.
With that said, you want to ensure that your tent is seam-sealed before taking it out on your first camping trip. I advise you to water it with a water hose in your backyard to see if (and where) the tent is leaking.
Let’s say that you are expecting heavy rain; in this situation, it would be smart to extra waterproof your camping tent.
What makes them waterproof?
Cotton fibers absorb the moisture to some level and consequently shrink so water can’t get through the material.
Still, some traditional natural fabric tents are waterproofed with the polyurethane which seals the fibers and makes a product even more waterproof.
This way, the material won’t absorb the moisture and the water will just slide to the ground.
Do cotton tents need waterproofing?
If the manufacturer claims that their canvas tents are waterproof then you don’t need to protect them additionally in case of nice weather or moderate rain. However, it is always best to do it if you expect heavy storms and wind.
Which waterproofing spray should you use?
The waterproofing method depends on the camping tent itself. If you have an acrylic canvas tent then you will use fluoropolymer-based waterproof spray. Petroleum sealant is another way to do it by brushing it onto the fabric.
I recommend using eco-friendly waterproof products by DryGuy which are specialists for waterproofing cotton canvas tents.
How to waterproof a canvas tent?
The best way to waterproof a canvas tent is to set it up outside and leave it so the rain will soak it naturally.
The next option is to use your water hose and weather it for a few hours. It is important that you soak the tent so the tiny holes in the fabric will close. You might repeat the process a few times. Use DryGuy products as well.
How long do canvas tents last?
Cotton canvas tents have a lifespan that can range anywhere from three to five years. This is based on the quality of the tent and how often it is used for camping trips.
Are canvas tents hot in summer?
Canvas tents can get hot in summer if there is no breeze and the sun is shining fully on them.
If you do not have enough shade or breeze then you may need to take extra care when considering what to wear in hot weather.
Black canvas absorbs more light than other colors, so it can get even hotter than other colors if exposed to the full force of the sunshine.
Do they hold heat?
Yes, this type of material is a natural isolator so it will hold the warmth inside. This is especially important when winter camping or being in remote cold areas.
In summer, you should make sure that you have proper ventilation in your camping tent. You can also put a fan inside to stay in a more comfortable environment.
How much do they weigh?
These types of tents are heavier than other ones on the market. The weight depends on the unit’s size and pole type.
A 4 person canvas tent can weigh about 50 lbs while a 6 person one can weigh about 70 lbs or more. Large canvas tents that can accommodate up to 10 people can weigh over 100 lbs.
Are they better than nylon?
So, what makes canvas tents better than nylon tents? Their material is natural and more breathable than nylon. A canvas tent has better isolation properties so you will feel warmer in this one.
Another advantage is durability which is much more durable than in nylon tents. You will also like it due to its quietness meanwhile nylon rustle in the wind.
Are tents with stoves safe?
Many canvas tents have a jack hole where a stovepipe can be placed through the canvas and up through the roof.
However, questions arise about safety with such an arrangement. The main worry is that sparks and hot ashes might fall from the stove onto the lower part of the tent and burn holes in it.
Jack holes are fire-resistant on canvas tents so you don’t need to worry about burning the roof but you must also consider having a fire-resistant floor or putting something around the stove that can withstand any sparks or embers that fall on the tent’s ground.
How to clean a canvas tent?
Use water and a cloth to clean your cotton canvas tent. I suggest you use a water hose. Avoid using detergents and soaps as they could destroy the waterproof coat that is on the tent’s fabric.
How to remove mold from the canvas tent?
If you didn’t store the tent dry then you can get mold on it. So, how to remove it? Put some distilled white vinegar on the fabric and let it dry.
Now mix salt, lemon juice, and hot water and put the mixture on the molded area. Scrub it with a soft brush.
If this doesn’t work as it should then use Oxyclean in powder form.
How to dry a canvas tent?
You have a few options when it comes to drying a canvas tent. You can dry it outdoors by pitching it in your backyard, for example, and drying it in the warm sun. You can also hang it on something so the walls dry completely.
Another option is to do it indoors, let’s say in a basement or garage. Place a fan pointing directly on the tent to speed up the drying process but don’t put it too close to the fabric.
How to season a canvas tent?
When the camping season is over for you, the best thing is to season your camping tent for the next time usage.
You have two options regarding waterproofing it; wait for the rain to come or water it with a water hose.
Bear in mind that you should leave it under the water for some time to seal that tiny holes as well. It must be soaked with water, this way you will have a perfectly seasoned canvas tent ready to use the next time.
Then dry the tent completely and repeat the process 2-3 times. Store a dry tent.
How to repair a ripped canvas tent?
If your canvas tent has been ripped on a camping trip it is time that you repair it. Fortunately, canvas material is easy to sew.
Find a hole in the fabric and extend the material so you will see it clearly. Grab a sewing awl and a thread and sew the hole.
Now you will have to put a patch on the weakened material so it will hold the pressure. Cut a circle patch that is big enough to cover the tear. Clean the area so the patch will stay on (if you don’t do it a patch has a big chance of falling off).
I suggest that you use Tear Mender glue to put a patch on the inside of the tent. Put a thin amount of glue on the bottom of the patch and cover the tear.
Place something heavy on and let it dry. Now repeat this process with the outside patch.
Get a canvas tent repair kit
If you want to have all the necessities to patch the canvas then I recommend getting the repair kit from Outfitters Supply.
The kit includes canvas patches, a Speedy Sticher sewing awl, a waxed polyester thread, and a Tear Mender glue to do the work properly.
Having this kit is a great way to avoid costly repairs.
Can you paint it?
Yes, you can paint your cotton canvas tent to have an even more attractive look.
You will need a paint gun, medium viscosity acrylic paint, seam sealer, stencil, or another method of covering the canvas and heavy-duty tape.
The first step is to put your tent up and seal the seams. Let it dry. Spray the tent with the lightest color that you want.
Now apply the tape stencils or other coverings on the lightest colored areas. Spray the entire tent again.
You can play and use darker colors when you did this. Let the old stencils where they are and ad some new ones to the existing ones.
Spray it again. Let the paint dry between each layer. Remove the stencils and you are done.
