Large Family Camping Tents
When looking to buy the right one you should consider some factors. You must know its size and how many people it can accommodate. If you are looking for more privacy then the one with multiple rooms is the best to take.
These ones are known for their sturdy material and an affordable price. They also come in different shapes, mostly in cabin shape, and can be used throughout the year.
Still, finding a quality sizeable tent is not an easy task, especially if you are a beginner camper. So, in order to make things easier for you, I made a full analysis of these giants.
Tahoe Gear Ozark 3-Season Family Cabin Tent
- Large yet practical with a generous 7-foot center, the Tahoe Gear Ozark is perfect for group or...
- Easy to assemble shock-corded poles and pin-and-ring system allow for quick setup
- Features water-resistant 1200mm polyester fly with taped fly seams and polyethylene floor
- Fly canopy extends out over the door for extra coverage, and includes guy ropes on each side for...
- Open mesh-design and floor vents provide excellent cross ventilation throughout the tent
The first one on my list is the Tahoe Gear Ozark 3-season cabin tent. It has an 86.61 inches peak height that offers plenty of room for taller people.
The model can accommodate up to 16 people. This model weighs 47.4 pounds and has a 30 x 13 x 12 inches dimension.
It features a water-resistant 1200mm polyester body and fly with taped fly seams and polyethylene floor.
The coating is quite good for a 3 season model. The leg shock-corded poles are made of strong steel while the roof poles are made of fiberglass.
Fly canopy is big enough to cover the doors. You attach it by clipping the plastic clips to the metal triangle clips on the poles. Guy ropes on each side stabilize it in wind.
Floor vents and mesh material take care of ventilation. Windows have zippered panels that can be used for privacy or resting throughout the day.
Its packed size is 30.1 x 13.6 x 11.8 inches that is nice to put in a vehicle trunk.
The unit has a power port so you will be able to have electricity inside. It has 2 doors, 9 windows and offers 3 rooms. This unit features a bathtub floor.
As it is quite tall I don’t recommend it in a windy season because there is a chance that wind gusts can blow it away.
The only things it lacks are the inner pockets and a hook for hanging a lantern or some other lighting source.
This is a very big camping tent that is freestanding and is easy to set up. Due to shock-corded poles and pin and ring system, its assemblage is easy. It should take you around 20 minutes which is not long for such a large structure.

This instant unit measures 14 x 10 ft. and weighs 36.1 pounds. It has completely vertical walls and a center height of 7 feet.
Fabric and technology
The model is made from nylon material. The vertical poles are manufactured with powder-coated steel while roof ones feature fiberglass. It features a bathtub floor.
It has the WeatherTec system that features welded and inverted seams and a minimalistic rainfly which will keep you dry.
This two-room cabin tent is appropriate to use in mild weather. It has 6 huge windows and a door that increases ventilation.
Fan and lighting system
Fan and lighting are the top features to mention in this model as I didn’t see any other tent having these kinds of features.
I am sure you will love the illuminated wall switch that enables you to choose between low, high, and nightlight mode.
There is a fan that can be configured with two directions and two speeds. Having a fan installed inside is a luxury for sure.
You will need to have a CPX 6 cartridge or 4D batteries to keep the fan and lighting running. These two are capable to deliver 75 lumens and a 27-hour runtime in combination.
This Coleman unit is one of the best large camping tents that look like a house that you can choose if you are camping as a group.

Ozark Trail 10-Person Instant Cabin Tent
Like most big outdoor units offered by Ozark Trail, this is a beautiful, spacious, and comfortable model.
You can set it up within 2 minutes due to the pre-attached poles. It measures 14′ x 10′ and has a center height of 78″. This unit weighs 37 pounds.
Fabric and Dark Rest technology
This is a polyester tent that has a polyethylene floor. Poles are made of steel. The model has a Dark Rest technology to sleep in the total dark.
This comes in handy when you want to sleep a little longer than usual because sun rays won’t wake you as in a shelter with ordinary material.
It is nice to have in the summer as the dark interior will make your camping more bearable in hot temperatures.
It is a 2-room tent that has 8 windows. It has deluxe gear pockets, a hanging gear organizer, and electrical cord access.
This Ozark Trail model has enough space for 3 queen airbeds. Airflow is enabled with a mesh roof, 2 ground vents, mesh windows, and D-shaped doors (2 of them).
As a matter of fact, space is big enough to accommodate 10 people comfortably or 12 tightly if you don’t have a lot of gear with you. Separate sleeping and living spaces can be rustled up right away due to the room dividers.
You have different options regarding the light inside. The roof is mashed with translucent windows that have panels underneath so you can close them if you want a darker room or open them for more light.
As this is an instant model, you will have no issues with assembling it. Pre-attached poles enable easy assembly.
The poles are telescoping and extend to erect the tent. It will take you about 2-5 minutes to set it up for enjoyment.

Get a bigger group closer together
Large tents are ideal for camping with family and big groups. You have separated rooms for privacy and still have a chance to socialize with people you care about and love spending your time with in the common section of the tent like a porch.
Invite friends to spend the night
These are not only perfect for camping, but large luxury camping tents can also be used when you are hosting an outdoor party. You can invite your friends to spend a night in a tent after a fun evening.
These outdoor adventures might even become a tradition that you can organize every summer.
Large camping tent buying guide
You don’t have a clue which of these giant tents to choose for your outdoor adventures? I admit that it is hard, especially when you are a beginner and you want to pick a model that will keep you safe and dry.
No matter if you are a camping beginner or an experienced outdoorsman, I suggest that you consider my tent buying guide that will reveal to you the factors of the tent that you must pay attention to.
There are units that are meant to use in the spring, summer, and fall and there are those that you can use even in the snow and low temperatures.
The first ones are known as 3-season tents and the second as 4-season ones. I will explain the main features of both types so you will know which one to look for.
3 season tents
These ones are the most popular as most campers enjoy nature when the temperatures and the weather are normal. Are you one of them?
If you like to take your family and friends camping in the nice weather with the possibility of rain then this tent type should fit you.
Plenty of mesh material
If a unit is made of polyester, nylon, or other synthetic material then it will have plenty of mesh.
Some manufacturers include no-see-um mesh which is a micro-mesh netting that is very light and durable. It is also used for making hammocks and other outdoor gear.
Why is mesh important?
Mesh is important for ventilation and prevention of condensation. Fresh air will come through the tiny holes in the mesh in and hot air will leave the space through them.
It also serves for stopping those annoying bugs and mosquitoes to enter the interior and making your trip unbearable.
4 season tents
Four season tents are different than the three-season ones and are meant for more extreme weather conditions.
If you intend to camp through all year or want to enjoy the outdoors in the winter then it is best to choose this type.
These products are built to provide rain, snow, and wind protection and are warmer than the tents for three seasons.
They have shapes that withstand the harsh weather conditions well. The materials are durable and strong.
Generally, they include a vestibule. A vestibule comes in handy for storing the gear and to stay protected from the snow loads and wind gusts.
It is important for the alpinists and mountaineers as they don’t want to store their backpacks in the living space.
Because four-season models are meant for inclement weather, they come in different shapes to withstand the wind and snow loads.
A geodesic tent shape is the most common when it comes to camping in the mountains.
With its shape and design, it is able to withstand the strong winds that are common in mountains.
It is low and shaped so the wind can easily go through the tent, meaning the shelter doesn’t present so much of a barrier to the wind.
You have different shapes to pick from. Are they important? The most common shapes of spacious tents are a cabin, dome, tunnel, bell, and others.
The shape that you pick depends on the purpose of your journey. If you want to have a luxury experience then it is best to opt for a bell, cabin, or tunnel product since they offer enough space and height.
However, high tents can have problems with the strong wind so you must stake them properly. Dome units are more wind-resistant as they have a round shape and are more grounded.
Their disadvantage is that they don’t offer so much height for free walking as cabin ones. Choose the shape that will make your outdoor stay safe and pleasurable.
I will explain some features of them so you will understand why choosing the right shape is important.
The majority of large camping tents with rooms come in this shape. When assembled, they look like a cabin.
The high vertical walls offer plenty of space, especially height. Most manufacturers include curtains for having privacy.
These ones are great for spending cozy vacations in the great outdoors since you will be able to put furniture inside.
With the warm and comfortable camping bed you will have a good night’s sleep and wake up full of energy. This isn’t possible in lower tents as dome ones.
For those of you who look for luxury and a more comfortable adventure, a cabin shape is perfect for you.
Big camping units can have a dome shape if I am more precise, an extended dome shape. This model has one main room and two or more side rooms where you can rest.
Dome-shaped tents aren’t so spacious as cabin ones but offer good wind-resistance and still enough space to have a good outdoor experience. The rooms can be divided for privacy most of the time.
Tunnel camping units are wonderful for groups as they will have enough headroom and living space inside. The flexible poles are used to make a tunnel. With the guy lines, they can handle bad weather well.
Bell camping units are special and remind me of those native American Indian tents. Teepee or bell tents are the highest of all.
They are perfect for tall people since they will have no limits while walking inside. Usually, these include a center pole that goes to the center of the roof.
Cotton is the fabric used for making them. This material is known for its durability, mold-resistance, and breathability.
However, they are heavy and not so easy to clean as synthetic material. You should dry the cotton completely before storing it in the carry bag.
They offer plenty of usable living and sleeping space for the furniture inside. There are no doors that are wider and taller than in a bell tent so going in and out is super easy.
Good all-year tents
These ones are more of 4-season tents as they are made of canvas. This means that it will be a good shelter to use in the hot summer and cold winter.
Many of them also have a stove jack that is safe to use for warming the interior. Teepee tents are luxurious products to use for base camping throughout the year.
Now we will talk about the setup. As camping evolved, manufacturers of the tents introduced models that can be pitched without extra struggle with pole assemblage.
In the past, there was only one option to set up a tent and it included the pole assemblage.
Today, you have instant, inflatable, and pop up units that make the erecting process much easier. Here are a few words for each so you will get to know them.
Traditional pole setup
The most common tent assembly involves extending the poles and inserting them into the fabric sleeves to get a unit standing. You will have to use instructions for setup and follow the steps to insert the poles correctly.
This type of setup includes extending the poles, inserting them through the sleeves of the fabric, and securing them in the pin and ring system. In most cases, you will have to use the clips to attach the poles with the fabric.
The tent should be staked at the end to be stable in the wind if we are talking about a non-freestanding unit.
With instant or automatic tents, you won’t need to bother with poles as they are stitched to the fabric. They have a hub system that is similar to umbrellas.
As the telescoping poles are stitched to the material, you will just need to extend them and lock them so the shelter will be stable.
Inflatable tents are those that have poles that need to be inflated to have a standing unit.
With an air pump (most brands give you one with the product) you will pump the air through the valve in the poles until the tent will stand. It is a quite simple setup that even a kid can do.
The easiest one that you can erect for camping is a pop-up model. You will just need to get it out of the carry bag and throw it in the air as it will open. This means no setup skills needed.
These units are made to occupy small number of campers and doesn’t come in the larger dimensions. I found ones for 6 occupants but I don’t believe that they can offer sleeping space for all of them comfortably.
How many rooms do you need?
Do you know how many of you are going outdoors? How much space do you need inside a tent?
Extra-large family camping tents have more rooms thanks to room dividers that are stitched on the product’s fabric or can be attached for privacy.
When you are staying in one model with other families or friends you will sleep in separate rooms.
Everyone needs some privacy, right? So, when picking the right tent get one that will be able to accommodate all of you comfortably.
Before buying one, check how many of you are going on the trip and who will sleep in each room. You can pick among two-room, three-room, or even multiple room tents if you are camping with a big group.
Which poles to pick?
There are different poles that help to get the tent up. I will explain a little bit of the most common ones so you will understand their differences.
These ones are strong, rigid, and heavy. Usually, they are used in canvas and other heavy tents so they can handle the pressure of the fabric and weather elements, especially wind gusts.
Stell isn’t expensive and handles corrosion well with a bit of maintenance (a silicon-based polish treatment).
Aluminum poles are known for their rigidity and durability. They have a high strength to weight ratio and look nice.
These poles are ideal for backpackers, hikers, and those of you who are walking to the campsite as they are lightweight. They won’t bend or deform easily. The maintenance is the same as in steel poles.
Fiberglass poles are the most common on the market as their cost is low. They are cheap and have good flexibility. These poles bend in the wind making less resistance to the tent.
Their biggest con is that they break easily so you must be careful how you handle them. This is why they are used in smaller models because the weight isn’t their best friend.
What about tent’s material?
You should pick your shelter carefully and consider its material. Outdoor brands make their creations from mainly synthetic but also from natural fabric.
Take a look at the common fabrics that are used to make outdoor camping tents.
Polyester is the most common fabric to make them. It is cheap and light. It is durable and comes in a variety of coating options. Manufacturers use coatings on it to make it additionally waterproof.
When in contact with the rainwater, it will slip away as the fabric doesn’t absorb moisture as cotton do. The fabric has good UV resistance and dries fast.
Nylon tents are those that hikers and backpackers choose first. They are light to carry in the backpack so they are perfect for an easy trail hike. They are also one of the most affordable tents on the market.
When in touch with the rain, the fabric won’t absorb the moisture and get heavy.
Manufacturers like to add factory coating of silicone, acrylic, or polyurethane to increase its waterproofness. A ripstop weave is used often to boost its strength and durability.
Canvas or cotton
Here you have a material that is used on some cabin and bell models. It is appropriate for car camping.
Some companies are well-known for making these tents from natural materials. These are Kodiak, Teton Sports, Dantchel Outdoor, Whiteduck, Staut Tent, Dream House, Geertop, and others.
So, what are its characteristics? Cotton is made of natural fabrics meanwhile other units are manufactured with a synthetic version of the material. The strongest canvas material is duck canvas that has the strongest weave.
It is a strong and durable material that absorbs moisture. It is heavier than synthetic fabrics so it appropriate for base camping with a car.
What is most impressive about it is the ability of fibers to expand and seal the tiny holes in the material when in contact with moisture. So you don’t have to worry about a wet interior in the case of rain.
Perfect 4 season tents
Cotton is great for having your tent ventilated. Cotton units are warmer than synthetic ones so they are perfect four-season models.
The height of the shelter is important also. Large family tents offer enough space for sleeping and other activities but how about the center height and head height?
If you intend to have a glamping experience then you should take a cabin, bell, or tunnel model due to the high walls and overall height.
Meanwhile, dome tents don’t offer such luxury as they are rounded and lack height for standing straight.
The bigger the tent, the more weight it will have. But still, you can pick a lighter one for family or group camping that you will be able to carry to your campsite.
Pick a light one
If you will be going backpacking or camping without a car then pick a model that is made of nylon or polyester with fiberglass or aluminum poles.
You must look for the light materials so they won’t burden you additionally on the trail.
Pick the model you want
For base camping, you can pick whatever tent you like as you won’t carry it for a long time, just to the campground. This means you can pick a heavy-duty canvas or any other model that you like.
Do you need a rain fly?
No matter when you are camping outdoors take my advice and get a rain fly for your model if it didn’t come in the package. This is important if you have a meshed tent that is perfect for summer camping.
A rain fly protects your unit from leakage and wet interior so you should have it with you. When the weather is hot, leave it in the bag but when the storm is coming, put it on and stabilize it so the wind won’t blow it away.
Some rain flies are extended above the doors to provide entry protection. This is a nice feature if you will be camping in an area where rain is common.
Most of them have vents so the moisture doesn’t gather between them and the tent’s fabric.
What about the doors?
Doors come in different shapes and sizes. If you look at the bell unit, it has large and wide A-shaped doors that enable going in and out smoothly.
Wide and high doors are great to have if you are carrying camping cots or other furniture inside.
Then you have D-shaped doors that are the most common in dome and cabin units. Some models have hinged-doors and some are two-sided to make entry simpler.
Doors are zipped with zippers. On most units, you will be able to roll them up or on a side to increase airflow or to watch nature.
Large models have multiple doors, allowing each group to have privacy. Multiple-room tents are typical for having more doors.
Why are windows important?
Windows have multiple purposes and watching through them is just the most obvious one. They are meant to have a light inside and to increase ventilation.
Large family units have plenty of them to help prevent condensation. Flaps on the windows are there to offer privacy when you need it.
Some models have angled windows so they can stay open even if it is raining. The Coleman Montana is worth mentioning here.
How big of a tent do you need?
You should pick a tent that will be big enough to accommodate all of you comfortably. The general rule is to pick one that will also have some extra space for storing gear.
So, if there are 6 of you going camping get a tent for 8 people. This way you won’t squeeze inside and have a space for sleeping comfortably and gear storage.

These products come in Y shape, cabin, extended dome, cube, L shape, and others that you can choose from.
I like the price of their units so any camper can buy one for his outdoor pleasures with loved ones.
Are expensive tents worth it?
You have expensive large camping tents and you have cheaper ones but why should you consider buying the expensive ones? Their quality is connected to the price to some extent.
Quality and price
You should opt for an expensive one if you intend to camp through all year on different locations and terrains.
Its quality should be better than if you opt for a cheap large tent that won’t last long and you will have to buy another one to proceed with camping.
Reputable brands cost more
The price depends on the brand, quality, features, and other specifications. If you look at different ones you see that some companies have pricier products than others, so the price can be high also due to the brand.

Should you get a luxury or a budget one?
The price is an important factor when buying an outdoor shelter for bigger groups. Budget tents have a good price but often aren’t so durable and quality as more expensive models.
When to choose a budget one?
You can get a cheaper large tent if you have kids who will jump in and out because there is more risk that they will torn it. If your budget is low but you would like to go camping there isn’t another option but to get this one.
When to choose a luxury one?
Luxury models can cost much more than ordinary tents with cheap material.
Products that come in special shapes, have quality and expensive material, special features, and are made of reputable brands are labeled as luxury ones, and these cost.
Get a luxury large one if you intend to camp with adults or families who have older children. Also, you can get one if you have enough money to spend and you wanted to try that special looking tent that you like.
Canvas and bell units are pricier because they are mostly made of cotton which is expensive to manufacture.
However, if you get one of these two you will be able to enjoy the outdoors for many years as they are heavy-duty and strong. Pick a luxury and expensive model if you intend to camp regularly, throughout the year.
The price isn’t always the best factor to elevate the product’s worth but in most cases it is important.

How do you waterproof a large tent?
If you want to waterproof it due to worn waterproof coating or to protect it additionally against precipitation, follow my next steps to do it right.
Step #1 – Cleaning the tent
Before going to the main task you need to clean the tent so the coating will stick to the fabric.
To do so, lay it out on the ground and clean it with a sponge, and a mixture of warm water and mild detergent. Wash it out with water (the best way is to use a garden hose).
Step #2 – Dry it
Now that you have clean it, expose it to the sun to dry out. This is important so there won’t be any mildew on the fabric.
Cotton tents are more prone to get it as synthetic ones so make sure that the unit is totally dry to proceed with the main task of waterproof treatment.

Models that have a standard setup requires more time to get them ready than instant ones that have a hub system.
At these tents, you just extend the telescoping poles and secure them. Outdoorsmen spend the most time assembling and inserting the poles in traditional set-up tents.
Ozark Trail 16×16 Feet 12 Person 3 Room Instant Cabin Tent Setup
This is how you pitch the L-shape Ozark Trail tent. Take the storage bag and put all parts out. Put the poles are other small stuff on the side and grab a tent.
Extend it to the place where you want to pitch it. You must see the hub system with the poles, so it will be looking uprights.
Extending the telescoping poles
When you extended the corners of the unit, step to the center where the hub system is and start extending the poles slowly one by one.
It is easier if someone helps to extend the corners while you extend the telescoping poles.
Start with the central hub system and let it stand up. Then you go around and extend the other poles so you will get a standing structure. When it is standing as it should, stake it for stability.
Rain fly and awning setup
The final step is to put the rain fly on. Let someone help you with this too. Take the pole for the awning and set it up so you will get an awning in front of the doors. Guy it out.
Prairie Breeze Cabin tent setup
Put all parts from the carry bag. Grab a tent and extend it on the ground where you will pitch it. Look for the door and turn it where you want them to be.
Assembling the poles
Stake the webbing loops on the sides of the tent. Assemble all the poles by unfolding and inner locking the pole sections.
Now grab the 2 longer black fiberglass poles with the gray mark and a shorter black fiberglass pole with the red mark and insert them through the sleeves on the roof.
Use the pole connectors to connect the poles. Insert the pin into each leg pole to attach the frame to the ground. Use the clips on the fabric and attach them to the poles.
Putting the rain fly on
Drape the rain fly through the tent. Insert rain fly S-hooks to the corner and center poles. Secure it with the hook and loose straps located on the other side of the rain fly.
Stake out the guy lines
Attach and stake out the illuminate reflective guy lines. Adjust the sliders on the ropes to make sure the lines are tight.
How to set up the Ozark Trail 20 Person unit?
No matter that this one is a giant, its setup is easy. Take a look at the assemblage steps.
Building the roof
Ask someone to help you extend the model out. Lay it out so the corners will be fully extended. Now find the 3 main poles with the silver connectors.
Lead the poles through the three criss-cross sleeves of the roof. Tie the poles together on the center of the roof.
Finish with the poles
Grab the shorter poles and insert them into the hub as well to get a hexagon shape. Connect the poles into the plastic hubs so the roof will get its shape. Set each of the leg pole into the pins.
Set up the two side rooms
Pick the longest side room poles and insert them through the sleeves on each side and secure them in the ring and pins. With this action, you will get those two side rooms of the extended dome unit.
Make sure that you use the two thicker metal poles for the sides and the fiberglass pole for the eave.
Setting up the rain fly and guy lines
Ask someone to help you here. Aline the rain fly with the doors and attach it to the poles on the front side. Anchor the corner of the fly with the hooks and velcro all the corners and stake out the extra guy lines.
Enjoy your time together
Don’t forget that large tents differ in many features compared to small camping models.
Having a bigger tent means a lot of space and comfort but it is heavier than a small one so carrying it for a long time isn’t an option. A large camping tent is perfect for car camping.
Setup can be demanding but you don’t have to worry about pitching it by yourself as you will camp with others.
Choose a model that will satisfy your outdoor needs and offer features that are important for spending safe and quality outdoor time.
