Motorcycle Tent Buying guide

Motorcycle tents are a good investment if you are a hardcore motorcycle adventurer. Generally, tents are very convenient in many situations and it is going to save you a lot of money instead of choosing to stay at a hotel.

motorcycle camping tent buying guide

Next factors are important when choosing a shelter that will offer element protection for your vehicle and a sleeping place.

This is probably going to be the most important consideration you will have to make. Most motorcycle camping tents are only good for one or two people.

Pick a model that is just right for the number of people it is going to accommodate and to store the bikes.

The weight doesn’t matter much because you don’t have to carry it on your back. But then again, the lighter it is, the smaller it tends to be and easier to store in the saddlebag.

You can choose between a 3 season and a 4 season tent. Since riding with a motorbike is more of a nice weather thing I am sure you will opt for a meshed tent.

However, if you intend to go on the road in the season where you expect more rain and also snow, it is better to opt for an all-year model.

Easy to use

After a long day of riding, you don’t want to spend too much of your precious time trying to set up a camp. Tents designed for motorcycle camping are usually easy to set up.

Nylon is the best fabric to use for moto camping. This material is a lightweight and hard-wearing fabric that could be folded easily and compactly. Avoid the heavy and bulky canvas.

Other considerations

Opt for a product with a large coverage fly that reaches the ground. It is going to keep you dry all night. Picking out a tent wisely will guarantee years of usage and comfort while on the road.

How to go motorcycle camping?

Going camping with a motorcycle is much different than going into the wilderness with a car. You have limited storage options when you travel by bike so take my moto-specific tips to travel safely with the gear you need.

Consider bike camping as backpacking as the weight and the way you pack things matter the most. This is why you need to know more about saddlebags for storing gear and equipment.

Heavy-duty saddlebags

If you have a heavy one you can opt for heavy-duty plastic saddlebags. These are waterproof in most cases, can be locked, are secure, and have dual functionality.

Pros & cons

You can take them off the bike and use them as a table or as a sitting chair. Consider that they are more expensive as a soft version and need a special mountain hardweare to get them on the bike. These are heavier and add width to the bike.

Lightweight soft saddlebags

If you have a more lightweight bike opt for soft saddlebags that won’t additionally weigh down the vehicle and making it harder to handle.

Soft luggage won’t add extra weight, is less expensive, and doesn’t need mountain hardware to get it on the bike.

The downsides are basically two. They aren’t so waterproof than plastic ones and anyone can cut the bag with a knife and steal it.

If you will get one make sure that you opt for a waterproof cover for it so the items inside will stay dry.

Get a tank bag

If you don’t have a touring style motorcycle that has a lot of storage space you can purchase a soft tank bag to store the items that you will need to have close at hand.

How do you pack a tent on a motorcycle?

The weight should be evenly distributed between both wheels. If you load too much weight behind the rear axle you can experience that the front tire will lift.

This is a dangerous thing to experience so consider packing your tent close to the bike’s center of gravity to keep you safe.

What do you keep in your saddlebags?

Saddlebags are important if you are going on a long ride or camping as you can store several things inside. What should you keep in saddlebags? These are saddlebag essentials that will keep you safe on the road.

  • Tool kit
  • Tire repair kit
  • Air compressor
  • Raingear
  • Zip ties
  • Jumper cables
  • Glow sticks
  • Phone charger
  • First aid kit
  • Mylar blanket
  • Rescue tape
  • Campstool

What do you need for motorcycle camping?

If you are heading to the road with your bike to spend some quality time in nature then you need some motorcycle camping gear that will come in handy. Here is the motorcycle camping essentials checklist to consider.

A tent

Get a decent motorcycle tent that will protect you and your bike outdoors from the elements. It must be suited for the climate and season that you will be camping in.

The product should be lightweight and fully foldable so it will go easily in the saddlebag.

Sleeping bag

This is the best sleeping option that you can opt because it is foldable and offers warmth and comfort. Choose a sleeping bag that will keep you warm regarding the season and the temperatures.

Inflatable pillow

Packing on a motorcycle demands lightweight gear and air pillows are great to have for pleasurable sleeping outdoors. These pillows inflate with air and deflate to a small item for light bike storage.

inflatable camping pillow

Multitool knife

A Swiss knife is smart to have in your saddlebag. It is small and has plenty of useful tools as a bottle opener, tweezers, scissors, and screwdriver bits that come in handy on the road and at the campsite.

First air kit

You should always think of your safety first. Make sure you have a fully packed first air kit with you. It could help you to take care of the minor cut or could be a lifesaver so make space for it.

What should it contain as basics? The kit must have self-adhesive bandages, bandage tape, hydrogen peroxide, gauze bandages, emergency blanket, thermometer, heat packs, cold compress pack and cotton balls.

Riding clothes and a helmet

As a rider, you have to have clothes that are wind-proof. Consider wearing riding pants, a jacket, boots, gloves, and of course a bike helmet that will protect your head in case of a fall.

Maintenance kit

This is one of the most important bike essentials, no doubt. If your tire gets flat or you need some minor repairs a maintenance kit will help you to fix the issue and proceed to the camp or to the shop to get a new vehicle part.

These are biker’s storage bags where you put gear and other essentials for the road. If your bike doesn’t have them, you can opt for soft ones of those of plastic that are more heavy-duty but heavier.

Make a few rides with them before heading to your destination so you get used to them as a bike handles differently with them fully loaded.

Cooking accessories

If you intend to camp for a few days in the wild then you need to have a portable camping stove. This cooking item will help you to make warm and nutritious meals to sustain the body’s energy.

Choose among foldable and lightweight cooking sets to cook your favorite dishes fast and easy no matter where you are.

Are jeans good for motorcycle riding?

Street jeans are not thick enough for motorcycle riding and the stitches are not so strong as in motorcycle pants.

If you are going on a long ride I recommend that you get motorcycle pants that are made of abrasion-resistant material.

However, if you want to wear pants that look like jeans, you can order your motorbike jeans pants that have heavier denim, knee protectors, air vent mesh, and a calf zipper that stabilizes the knee protectors when riding in them.

What should you not wear on a motorcycle?

There are some of the things that you shouldn’t think about wearing while riding a motorcycle. With them you are jeopardizing your safety and well-being so take a look at gourmets and gear that you shouldn’t wear.

Loose clothing

Gourmets that are loose aren’t appropriate to wear as they can be distracting for a rider. Flailing clothes can be distracting and uncomfortable so avoid wearing them.

Why shouldn’t you wear shorts on a hot day while on the road? These won’t give you any protection if you fall off your bike.

Motor riders wear long pants that are abrasion-resistant so in case of a fall they don’t get scratches and injuries.

Sandals are also on the no-no list. They won’t give you any protection against that hot exhaust pipes and crazy hot engine.

man sandals

Purchase good pair of riding boots instead of sandals that will protect you.

Used helmet

A helmet is basic bike equipment for protecting your head. Helmets can be expensive but getting a used one can be a mistake. A used one can be damaged and won’t give you the protection you need if you fall off the bike.

So, invest in a good, new helmet as you don’t want to experience dangerous head injuries. Look for a DOT and SNELL certified.

Motorbikers wear scarves on their heads under the helmet but what about wearing regular ones around the neck?

If you wear a scarf around the neck it could distract you while riding or can fall off and put other road participants in danger.

Which of the tents on the list do you think would be the most appropriate for you? Think of all the features that I have stated to pick the right model.

Enjoy your ride and if you have other questions or suggestions, let me know about them in the comment below.
