This is a freestanding unit with a 7000 series aluminum two-pole design (8.5 mm) that is easy to set up. The floor is made of 75D 185T Poly Taffeta material and has a 2000 mm coating.

The fly features 75D 185T polyester fly with a 1500 mm coating which makes this model great for three-season camping.

Because it is compact and lightweight (4.2 lbs.), you can assure that it will provide you with supreme portability. You’ll have no problem carrying it anywhere and also move it when assembled since it is freestanding.

It has one D-shaped door and a full-coverage vestibule (10 square feet) for storage and for extra weather protection. Doors can be rolled aside when you don’t need them.

Snugpak The Ionosphere 1 Man Dome Tent

The Ionosphere one-man model measures 94 x 35 x 28 inches and is perfect for a solo adventurer. The pack weight is 3.34 pounds. It is made of two fabrics; inner meshed and outer fly.

Its inner material is manufactured of 190T nylon with 50D polyester mesh. It has a flysheet that is made of lightweight 210T polyester rip-stop material with a 5000 mm polyurethane coating for leakage protection. The unit includes DAC Featherlite NSL anodized aluminum poles.

Other specs

The Snugpak Ionosphere provides you with protection from insects with its all-around mesh cover. It has a rainfly that will keep you safe from elements and tape-sealed seams to increase protection. The floor includes a bathtub feature.

Its low profile makes this one great for windy conditions as it won’t make a lot of a barrier. The Ionosphere 1 is a user-friendly tent as it is compact and packs small (19″x6″).

Due to the size, you can pack it on your backpack or on the bike or motorbike.

The interior is pretty dark with the installed fly so you will sleep longer without the sun disturbing your rest in the early morning.

On summer days you won’t have a problem with the condensation since the product has a full-meshed inner fabric. How about if you put a fly on? It doesn’t have any vents which is surprising to me. However there is a gap between both layers so the air can come inside.

This model has two access doors and when you set up the fly, both doors will have a vestibule. One door has a centered zip, while the other one features two zips that are able to form an entrance that stands as a wind blocker.

This lightweight one-man model is perfect for all-year usage and is easy to set up. It has color-coded poles with press-fit connectors.

This means this model doesn’t have a Fly-First Pitch design. You basically have to set it up first and then add the fly.

Backpacking tent buying guide

What features do you need to look for when getting a hiking tent? The next ones are crucial for this type of shelter to have a light and enjoyable hiking trip.

best one man camping tents

Its material should be as light as possible. This is why you should consider a unit that is built out of nylon or polyester. These two fabrics are used often also on camping tents to provide lightweight.

There is no backpacking model made out of canvas but just to know, this material is heavy and bulky so it isn’t appropriate to carry for long distances. However, it is okay for car camping.

Poles can be fiberglass or aluminum. Fiberglass costs less for a manufacturer but is heavier than aluminum so prefer choosing the second option.

Aluminum tent poles are light, very strong to withstand winds, and won’t break as easily as fiberglass.

There are also steel ones but not used in these tents as steel is a heavy material. Steel poles are used in canvas tents to support the whole structure and withstand rough weather conditions.

Every good shelter for hiking has a vestibule so you can store the pack there. It also protects the entrance from the cold wind in the wintertime or in case of a storm.

Backpacking tent vestibule

Some models on the list have space in the sleeping area to put the pack and other equipment there but I recommend you choose a model that has a vestibule.

Bathtub floor

Most of my models have a bathtub floor. Why is this recommendable to have? A waterproof bathtub floor protects the interior of the shelter to stay dry from the rainwater and moisture.

Rain is falling through all the year so you better pick a model with it so you and your gear will stay dry and safe.

Easy and fast assembly

A tent for backpacking must have an easy setup. Many of them are made with two poles but you also have models that need just one to have the structure standing.

As a backpacker, you need a shelter fast to rest or to jump inside to stay safe and dry from the storm that is coming your way. This is why you need to consider a unit that will pitch easily and fast.

Benefits of getting a solo tent

Solo travelers and those who want to have more privacy when camping in a group should consider the next features of this tent type. There are several benefits of camping in this hiking unit.

solo backpacking tent

It gives you privacy

When you buy a solo backpacking tent, privacy is the first thing guaranteed. It is one of the reasons why people rather get it instead of the bigger ones.

You can sleep peacefully and comfortably all night long without anyone bothering you. Just imagine how nice it would be to sleep at night without having to deal with campers snoring all night.

It’s lightweight

Going hiking and backpacking means packing everything you need to survive in one pack. If you’re hiking with your friends, it would be the best idea to travel light.

Bringing bigger models isn’t only going to put a lot of weight on your shoulders, but it would also consume a lot of space in your bag.

It’s more affordable

Because solo units require less material, it’s not surprising that they are cheaper compared to family-size tents. While prices usually depend on the camping brands and features, size plays a big part.

family size camping tents

The reasons mentioned above are only three of the main reasons why you need to find the best solo backpacking tent for your next hike.

What is a backpacking tent?

A backpacking tent is a light outdoor shelter that backpackers and hikers pack in their packs to spend the night in nature. Its main characteristics are lightweight and easy assembly.

You have different ones to buy and from several outdoor brands that offer quality.

This type of shelter is meant for a single person or two to three people, bigger models can’t be carried for a long distance so they are categorized as camping tents.

How to choose a backpacking tent?

Here are the features that I recommend considering when choosing your new tent for hiking.

Weight is the first factor that every backpacker thinks of first as he will carry the product on his back. Tents that are used for backpacking are light but you should look for the one that has the minimum weight possible.

Which poles are best?

Tent poles come in different materials and are important to consider as they determine if the unit will be lighter or heavier. Look for the aluminum poles as they are the lightest and won’t add extra weight.

fiberglass tent poles

Avoid fiberglass and steel poles that will make your long walk on the trail more demanding.

Space is one of the most important factors as it will determine the quality of your outdoor experience. Ask yourself if the tent is big enough for you to sleep in and where will you put the gear.

Regarding the size, the model should provide enough space so you won’t feel claustrophobic inside and space for equipment storage. If you have a lot of gear with you then search for a unit with a vestibule.

When do you intend to enjoy the outdoors? If you will go to nature in spring, summer, or fall then it is ok to use a tent with more mesh so it will provide optimum ventilation.

It has some hydrostatic head coating to protect you from light to moderate precipitation.

However, use a unit with more density waterproof material if you intend to spend the night outdoors in wintertime or in the extreme places where the snowstorms and wind are often (like in the mountains).

Hiking in mountains

Get the one with a vestibule

Getting a shelter with a vestibule is the best way to spend your free time in nature satisfied.

As a beginner, I had a lightweight tent without a vestibule and stuffed the shelter with all the gear that I carried. It wasn’t such a good idea.

I recommend you to get a one-person model that has a vestibule so it will protect the entrance from the wind and cold and to be able to store all the gear that you don’t need to have in the sleeping area.

Should I get a 1 or 2 person tent?

I always say that a bigger tent is better if you are going camping due to more space but in the case of backpacking, you should consider your needs and the unit’s features.

A two-person backpacking tent has in general more space for you to sleep comfortably and to store the gear but it should also weigh more.

Get a solo tent with a vestibule

If you are going exploring the great outdoors alone then I recommend using a one-man unit with a vestibule where you will be able to have enough space for sleeping and storing gear separated from the sleeping area.

How big is a one-person backpacking tent?

Its size depends on the model and brand but in general, it has a space for sleeping, turning around, and changing clothes, nothing more.

As a backpacking shelter should be as light as possible you shouldn’t expect that it will have space for something else.

An example

If we look at the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx model, which is one of the most popular tents for hiking, you see that it measures 91.2 x 33.6 inches which is enough for comfortable sleeping, even if you are tall.

alps mountaineering lynx solo tent

Consider the headspace as well as I am sure you don’t want to feel claustrophobic inside. Always check if you will fit in the model comfortably as it will determine the quality of your outdoor adventure.

How heavy should a backpacking tent be?

A backpacking tent should be as light as possible. It should be lightweight so you can hike without extra weight on the back. The unit has light material and poles. Its weight shouldn’t be higher than 4 lbs.

How much should I spend on a one man tent?

The price depends on several factors. If you intend to go outdoors just a few times a year then you don’t need an expensive unit.

However, if you are an avid hiker and love to explore different places then you should consider getting a pricier product so it will withstand the terrains and wear well.

There is one factor more to mention. The seasonality of the unit is important and you should know which season tent to get.

Buying a model that can withstand the bad weather and snow will be pricier than a 3 season one because the manufacturer included more weatherproof features to it.

backpacking winter tent

The bottom point is that you don’t need to spend a fortune on it but consider the price and its user-friendliness ratio before making a purchase.
