How do I choose a sleeping pad?
As a side sleeper, you need a quality product that will offer you comfort in your resting position. I presented you with 5 of them that should rock you to sleep in no time.
The following are some of the general features you should look for when buying one for outdoor use.
Types of pads
There are three basic types of them and each performs differently. They include self-inflating, air, and closed-cell foams. Read on to know each type and its features.
These ones are made of air and open-cell foam insulation. When you open the valve the air will inflate it.
You can choose between those for car camping that are rolled but not folded and those for backpacking that are folded to minimum size and rolled up.
These are common and come in different shapes and styles. You can choose among lightweight ones for backpacking or thicker for a more luxurious camping experience.
Some are insulated to provide you additional warmth. You will have to inflate them, some of them have a pump stitched inside the product to ease your pumping and there are others that come with a pump.
Closed-cell foam pads
These are basic backpacking units that feature thick foam with tiny closed air cells. With them, you don’t have to worry about air leaks and punctures. They are durable and lightweight.
You need to think about how you will be using them. Will you be using it for backpacking or camping? A pad meant for car camping, for instance, cannot be used for winter camping.
Some of them are 3-season and 4-season products (with a higher R-value) so choose carefully to have a pleasant sleeping experience.
What else to consider?
There are other features that you need to think about which include: – cushioning, weight, insulation (R-value), and size. How well should your bed be insulated?
Should it be lightweight because you will have to carry it in your backpack? Ask yourself these questions before making a purchase.
Before you make your final decision, it is important to make sure that you think about all the features and ensure that you have gotten value for the money.
The pad should fit your body, make you comfortable, and have features that you need when sleeping outdoors.
Are sleeping pads necessary?
It is the necessary equipment if you want to have comfortable outdoor rest.
As they provide cushioning and insulation you will be able to have a night rest without waking up due to hard and cold grounds. They are also great to put on cots, just pick the right size of it to fit the cot perfectly.
How does it work?
It is made to provide cushioning and insulation to your body while sleeping or resting. Your body heat won’t escape through the product since it is insulated but it will return back to you.
There are plenty of them on the market, with different insulation levels, materials, and types. If you want to sleep on soft padding and feel warm at night you should definitely get one.
Does a sleeping pad keep you warm?
Yes, it is a piece of camping equipment that is insulated which means that it will keep you warmer than if you would sleep on the bare ground or just in a sleeping bag.
The insulation level depends on the R-value that measures the unit’s capacity to resist heat flow through it.
What makes a good sleeping pad?
A pad worth having is the one that is long and wide enough to fit your body, so know its measures before opting for one.
It should have a good insulation level (R-value) and cushioning so you won’t feel the ground and the cold.
This is very important as sleeping on the side will make additional pressure on certain points of the unit that could decrease the insulating level.
How thick should it be?
As you sleep on the side you need to have a thicker pad than other outdoorsmen whose weight is distributed on the wider surface.
So, go ahead and pick one that has at least 2.5 inches thickness so the hips and shoulders won’t sink all the way to the hard ground.
How much should it weigh?
Weight isn’t such an important factor if you won’t carry it in your backpack. The more important is that it provides a good thickness to make your body comfortable while laying on it.
The thicker it is the more it should weigh but not necessary. Camping pads can weigh from a few ounces to a few pounds.
How do I choose the right size pad?
The whole point is to get one that is long and wide enough to fit your body.
So, before purchasing one, you should know your body measures and the measures of the product to sleep on the right-sized model. The whole body must have support, bear this in mind.
What is a closed-cell sleeping pad?
This is the most popular outdoorsmen sleeping gear that is cheap and provides a comfortable resting experience. It uses dense foam filled with small closed air cells to provide insulation.
It is a durable, lightweight pad that often includes a heat reflective layer on one side to offer warmth.
How do you inflate a self-inflating sleeping pad?
It is easy to inflate it as you just need to open the valve and it will inflate on its own. The foam expands, sucks air into the mat, and makes it ready for usage.
Maybe you will need to inflate it additionally to have a good firmness for resting.
How long does a self-inflating sleeping pad take to inflate?
It will take a few minutes to inflate. Thermarest sleeping pads take around 5-15 minutes to inflate. The inflation time depends on the model and the pump you are using to get it ready.
Can you use a winter sleeping pad in summer?
Yes, you can use a winter sleeping pad in summer and try out how it works for you. If you will feel uncomfortable on it you can choose a model that has a lower R-value or sleep without a sleeping bag to have more air.
Are insulated sleeping pads too hot for summer?
They shouldn’t be too hot but if you feel uncomfortable you can roll off the quilt a little bit and make your summer night comfier.
What R-value sleeping pad do I need?
R-value determines how insulated the pad is. So, how insulated product do you need?
If you intend to camp in remote areas that are known for cold weather or if you will go winter camping then you should opt for one that has a high R-value.
The R-value for camping sleeping mats ordinary range from 1-7. If you intend to camp in the summertime you need an R-value of at least 2.5 inches (since you will sleep on a side).
Choose a product with at least 5 inches if you intend to go winter camping.
What is the R-value of a foam sleeping pad?
The R-value of this type of pad depends on the manufacturer and the model. You will see different R-values ranging from 1-3 or even higher values.
How do you increase the R-value on your pad?
If you want to increase the R-value of the bed for this and other reasons you can do it without the extra effort needed.
The only thing that you will have to buy additionally is a Mylar blanket. It is an emergency blanket that is used to reduce heat loss while sleeping outdoors.
So how will you do this? You will get an emergency blanket and tape it on the bottom of the product. It will do two things.
First, the blanket will make sure that your body heat isn’t lost through the pad to the ground. The second benefit you’ll get is that the reflecting material of the blanket will return the cold back to the ground.
The Yankee Tanker recommends using athletic tape, take a look at the video to know more about the whole pad insulating process.
Do you put it inside your sleeping bag?
The usual way is to put it underneath the sleeping bag. However, you can also insert it in the bag but you will lose some of the product’s insulation properties, so I don’t recommend it.
If you still want to have it inside make sure that you have a bag that is big enough to fit a pad.
How do you pack a sleeping pad in a backpack?
When you are heading home from a nature trip you should pack your bed the right way to fit in the backpack.
So, what is the best way to do it? The general rule is that it should be fully deflated if we are talking about inflating the product.
Packing an air pad
There are two ways to pack it in your backpack. The first one is to deflate and fold it to its original package shape. You can place it on the backside of the pack to have a padded frame. An air pad will be perfect for this packing style.
Packing a closed-cell pad
If you have a closed-cell foam pad, roll it in a tube and place it vertically into your pack to give it structure. As there will be some space in the roll you can put some smaller things inside it to save packing space.
How do you keep two of them together?
If you are going camping with your special someone and wanting to keep two of the mats together you should use the universal coupler kit.
A kit of this kind includes (2) elastic straps that will hold two of them together. One is placed at the feet and the other in a head area.
A man from Exped explains how to link two sleeping mats together with the Exped coupler kit that contains two straps. Go ahead and watch the video to stick them together without a hassle.
