There are three ways you can use this unit so it is a perfect 4-season tent. Pitch an inner tent that has a lot of mesh in the warm days and place a fly on when you see the rain coming your way.

Taking puppy outdoors

If you have a young pup I don’t recommend taking him with you as he doesn’t know the commands yet and won’t listen to you as a well-trained dog would.

If you still decide to take him with you take care of him all the time so he will be safe. Don’t forget on the leash, toys, a bed, puppy food, and water.

Do dogs like sleeping in tents?

Some do and others don’t, it depends on their habits. If you tough your young puppy to rest inside the tent then he shouldn’t have problems spending a night with you in it.

The more you will camp together the more he will adapt to the outdoors and also a shelter.

How to camp with a dog in a tent?

If you want to have a peaceful and relaxing camping trip then you should take my advice. Dog breeds act differently, some are more peaceful, and some are more anxious and active.

It’s important that you take care of your pet’s needs when camping with your dog outdoors.

As a dog owner, you know your pet well to know what he needs and what does his behavior means. So, how to make him happy and satisfied staying in the tent?

Tent camp at home

This is the best way to show him that a tent is a friendly place to stay over the night. Practice tent camping at home. Go ahead and pitch it in your backyard.

Spend some time with your Fido and go inside and out of the unit as much as possible. He will follow inside and through time he will adopt.

Take some of his favorite toys inside and play with him as he must be relaxed and feel safe. The more you will spend time with him in a shelter the more relaxed he will be.

Use a calming spray

I don’t know if you heard of a calming spray for dogs but it exists. Buy a dog calming spray so its smell will help him to adjust to the tent.

You can also spray the car with it. I recommend this type of product if you are a dog owner who has anxious and hyperactive pets.

Put a tarp on the floor

Some shelters have a floor or a pawprint that is made especially for his claws like the Nemo Equipment Aurora tent. However, most models don’t have a dog-friendly floor so you have to protect it yourself.

Place a tarp or a heavy-duty rug above the floor to protect it from claws and teeth. This is a simple but effective way to prolong the shelter’s life.

Leaving the tent

Teach him to give a sign when he wants to go out of the tent. My furry friend usually whimpers when he wants out as I taught him to give me a sign.

Using a dog’s paws is not a good idea because he could tear the door fabric. Teach him a better, smarter way to leave the interior.

How can you protect a tent from a dog?

If you don’t prepare to have him inside a tent you could end your adventure prematurely.

His place close to the door

Set a special place just for him that is close to the doors so he won’t run through the whole shelter for the exit. You could also place a dog bed where he will rest and additionally protect the floor sheet from damage.

Cut his claws

Another thing you can do preventively is to cut his claws. This is a wise straightforward way to prevent tearing of the tent’s floor. If you can’t do it alone take him to a vet and he will do it for you.

Can you leave a dog in a tent?

I don’t recommend leaving him inside for a longer time as he could suddenly want to get out. Never zip the shelter as he could get panic and destroy the tent to go free.

However, you can leave the door open to provide better airflow and to give him the possibility to go out on a short walk or to poop while you set a campfire and cook a meal.

What to bring for camping with dogs?

Don’t skip this paragraph as you will know what are dog necessities to take with you on the camping trip.

First aid kit

A dog’s first aid kit is basic equipment if you want to have a safe outdoor getaway. The kit includes some basic medicinal essentials that will come in handy in case something happens to your pooch.

Collar with information

No matter if you are camping in the backcountry or in a dog-friendly campground your doggo should have a collar so if someone finds your dog wandering around he can find you or call you about the missing pet.

Leash

A leash is a must and one of the most important pieces of equipment for a dog outdoors. Use it to make your pup stay at one place when you cook or set a campfire.

It is even more important that you have a leashed animal when you two are going for a hike. An unleashed dog can disturb and chase wild animals that are living there which isn’t a good idea.

Portable dog fences for camping

I like to put camping dog fencing close to the tent so my friend can have some space to move around and not be leashed and restrained all the time.

When buying yours, consider height, weight, material, adaptability (additional panels to put in height if he still grows), and size.

Poo bags

Poo bags are a must while camping with dogs as you should leave nature as it was before you came. You can purchase dog bags to have a clean camping area and not to disturb the animals who are living there.

Food and water bowl

I am sure your fur friend eats and drinks from bowls. If you don’t have a separate bowl for dog food and water, buy them so he can have his own containers to please his basic needs.

Dog camping furniture

How about his comfort while you enjoy the outdoors? Dog camping furniture such as a dog bed, a chair, a cot, and a dog sleeping bag are pieces of equipment that can make your pup more relaxed and satisfied.

Grooming kit

If you don’t have a dog grooming kit yet consider one so your four-paw friend will stay clean and free of dirt to enter the tent.

The kit comes in handy especially in summer when you want to thin his fur so he can cool himself faster. Use a nail kit to cut his long claws to protect the unit’s floor from being torn apart.

What do you do with your dog while camping?

There are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself with your four-paw friend on a camping getaway. Try the hottest ones!

Take a long walk

Moving and being active is a dog’s natural thing. As you came outdoors to have a good time, take him for a long walk around the campsite, taking his first aid kit with you.

Don’t forget to pack water and some snacks while you two explore the wood trails and hills. I recommend a small waterproof pack where you will be able to store all the hiking necessities.

Play fetch

When you don’t know what to do play fetch. Find a small stick (check if it has resin) and play fetch on the open area where he will be able to run freely.

This is a fun game for both of you. He will have his daily exercise and you will enjoy some quality time with him.

Go for a swim together

If your canine likes being in water then I have a perfect outdoor exercise for both of you. Pack some towels and snacks and spend the day near the lake or river.

Swimming is one of the healthiest cardio workouts that involve muscles of the whole body and doesn’t burden the joints. So this exercise is especially appropriate if you own an older animal that has weak joints.

How to keep your dog cool while camping?

The purpose of your journey is to have a nice time while exploring and learning new things with your pup.

However, camping with your dog on hot summer days can make your friend exhausted and not interested in the action.

So, what can you do to ease his outdoor stay? These are just a few ways that I like to use on my Fido when there is pretty darn hot outside.

Fresh and clean drinkable water

A pet should always have free access to fresh drinkable water while camping with dogs. Dogs cool themselves through the tongue so make sure he has it all the time.

Place a water bowl in a shady place and check if he still has it through the day. Refill when needed.

Take him swimming

This is one of my favorite ways to make my pet cool for a long time. Find a lake, a creek, or a river nearby and take him to have a swim. If the body is in water it cools faster than if he only drinks water.

There is one more advantage of this cooling method. After his refreshing swim, he will feel cool for hours as his fur will need time to get dry.

Pro tip: Stay away from the torrential rivers and waters.

Dog’s shade shelter

A dog shade tent comes in handy especially if you camp directly in the sun or in a place where there isn’t much natural shade. Place a shade shelter on the most cooling spot so he could have a more comfortable rest.

Make sure that a model is of the right size and breathable enough so the breeze will reach him easily.

Cooling dog bandana

Did you ever hear a tip to put a cold towel around your neck to cool yourself? The cool feeling helps to cool the veins of your neck and to feel relieved.

It is the same for canines. A cooling bandana for dogs that you buy in a store will help them to survive those hot summer temperatures.

Cooling dog bed or a gel-filled mat

This is one of my favorite dog camping gear for the summer. It cools down via an animal’s own body weight. Place it in the shade where he can catch an afternoon nap.

How cold is too cold to camp with a dog?

According to Camp Bow Wow, a canine is comfortable around 45 degrees F. When the temperatures go below 40 degrees F you should consider providing him some insulation or gear that will keep him cozy in cold weather.

Dog’s size

There are some other factors besides outdoor temperature to think of. His size matters as smaller dogs get colder faster than larger breeds.

Breed

I remember how my friend needed to drees up her Yorkshire terrier when he went out for a walk. She told me that he needs an additional warming coat (jacket) in colder weather.

I was even more surprised when she told me that this bread can also die if it is exposed to cold temperatures for too long.

Older dogs

If your dog has a thin coat and if he is older then don’t forget to bring some kind of warm bed. A puppy is full of energy and active so his blood is circulating and making him warm.

An older mutt doesn’t have much circulation so he needs a little help in a form of a sleeping pad, blanket, jacket, or sleeping bag so he could spend quality time with you.

How do you keep a dog warm in a tent?

If you intend to sleep in a tent with a dog on a winter camping trip then you should consider ways to keep him warm inside. What equipment to use to provide him with a warm and safe place to sleep?

Use a blanket

Use an old-fashioned way to keep warm outside; use a blanket. It will keep him warm when the temperatures get low so he will have an easier time falling asleep.

Dog sleep pad

If your friend isn’t used to sleeping in a bed with walls or in a limited space (bag) then you could get him a sleeping pad instead.

It will prevent losing his body temperature through the ground and make him cozy to spend the night beside you.

Dog sleep bag

Dog sleeping bags are a wonderful idea, especially if your pet is used to one. It will keep him warm and cozy all night.

When buying one, consider the warmth, durability, waterproofness, and size of a product to provide the right one for him.

If he isn’t familiar with it you can practice sleeping inside so he will get used to it and make it his own.

Does your dog need a sleeping bag?

It isn’t necessary that he has it. However, if he has short fur or is a delicate breed that gets cold pretty fast, it’s recommendable.

The benefit of a sleeping bag is that the pet doesn’t lose his body temperature so fast. Dogs like to curl up in things similar to cats so a bag will help Fido to feel safer.

If you are going camping with your dog in winter or when temperatures get lower than 40 degrees F then you should think of dog gear for camping that will keep him warm.

Blankets are useful and convenient as they can be folded in a backpack. You can lay it on the ground so he can stay on it or cover him with it. Know what he prefers and make him comfortable.

Being clean outdoors is a challenge for us humans but how about canines? Exploring, sniffing, and running around will make your pet dirty, that’s for sure. How to keep him clean and how to prepare him for bedtime in the tent?

A lake bath

You shouldn’t limit him while he’s exploring the surroundings. Go for a walk around the campsite with him and find new interesting places to see.

If your pup is dirty encourage him to jump in a lake or a creek to refresh and wash the dirt off.

Brushing his fur

When you come back to a camping spot take his favorite brush and start brushing his fur. Clean his paws with a wet cloth before he goes to sleep.

If he likes water then you can bathe him with a gentle shampoo that is meant for canines but don’t do it too often, just when he’s dirty.

How do you stop a dog barking when camping?

This is one of the most annoying situations no matter if you are staying in the campground or camping with your dog in the wild.

It is important to know why is he barking. Maybe he saw something in the bushes or just want your attention.

The way he barks

Observe his behavior while he barks. Is he barking aggressively or is he barking repeatedly? It is important to understand what kind of bark it is and find a solution.

Intruder bark

If you see that he barks because of a wild animal, close him to a fenced place or tie him to a tree and try to point the animal in a different direction.

Be extra careful if you see a bear nearby. Bears are afraid of humans and when they hear your voice they will automatically go away (if they don’t feel threatened).

What is in a dog first aid kit?

Having a first aid kit for a dog should be first on the list of dog essentials. You never know what happens out there so prepare his kit at home to help him in case of bleeding or injuries in the wild.
