Do you need a stove for backpacking?
The answer to this question is simple. If you will backpack then you will need to eat, right? You can always pack your backpack with sandwiches and dry food but don’t you want to prepare yourself a warm meal with nutrients?
Cooked meals are more nutritious and provide us hydration, and you can also use the stove to boil water and purify it.
If you will be in nature for a few days then I strongly recommend purchasing one so you can prepare a morning coffee, a hot soup, and other healthy meals.
Why use a wood-burning stove instead of a gas one?
The wood-burning cooker is a better option than getting a gas one, but why?
You won’t need to pack any gas tank with you, won’t burden the pack additionally because of it, will be able to pick the fuel in the woods, and at the same time protect nature as it is environmental-friendly.
Gas fuel canisters for backpacking stoves are small and can run out of fuel fast but you have plenty of twigs, sticks, pine cones, and other biomass in nature to pick and they will never run out.
What to cook on a hiking stove?
You have plenty of options to cook different meals on your hiking cooking appliance. You can prepare soups, eggs, sausages, oatmeal, pancakes, and other delicious dishes.
Here are some other ideas for backpacking meals:
- Pasta with sauces
- Mac & cheese
- Trail potatoes
- Trail pizza
Here is a recipe for trail pizza from Seattle backpacker’s magazine that you can try while having a break while you hike and explore new locations.
Make sure you have enough wood prepared so the fire will last and your meal will be cooked.
I recommend doing some homework and chopping the meat, veggies, and other foods at home to spear time while you enjoy the great outdoors.
You can also cook rice and pasta at home if you like and just add tuna and cooked veggies for having a nutritious meal on the trail.
Even better, pick some instant foods (instant rice, instant potatoes, etc.) so you will have dishes cooked in no time without having to wait long for a meal. These are nice when you are hungry and need nutrients fast.
Are twig stoves good?
Twig stoves are the most simple and efficient way to prepare your outdoor meal on the trail. It is really simple to set up this kind of cooker, pick some twigs, and set a fire to prepare a hot coffee or cook dinner.
You don’t need to pack any fuel in your backpack. These units are foldable and portable.
The only con that these appliances have is the fuel type as you will need to pick enough twigs so the fire won’t go out as you prepare your meal or drink.
Are Solo stoves any good?
Solo stoves are far most popular among outdoor stoves on the market. The Solo Stove company is making fire pits, camp stoves, grills, and accessories to help you have the most pleasurable moments in nature.
The best thing about their wood-burning cookers is that you won’t need to bring any fuel with you on an outdoor adventure as you will pick it in the woods.
With the simple wood-burning solutions, you will be able to boil water and cook meals in no time.
Do Solo stoves rust?
Solo stoves are made of stainless steel which is known for not rusting. If you want to know why stainless steel doesn’t rust read this short article by Scientific American.
Their cooking products also include nichrome wire which is extremely resistant in nature.
No matter the quality of non-rusting materials I recommend that you clean your cooker after usage and wipe it with a dry cloth.
How do you keep a solo stove shiny?
It is important that you clean your stove after using it. As they are made from stainless steel, I reccomend using a stainless steel cleaner to prolong the life of the product.
Bar Keepers Friend is an American company that manufactures exceptional cleaning agents; outdoor cleaning products as well.
The Bar Keepers Friend liquid stainless steel cleaner is a perfect choice when it comes to cleaning your stainless steel stove.
The product is powerful enough to remove oil stains and will make a cooker shiny and protected for a long term use.
Does the Solo stove keep you warm?
No matter that the backpacking stove is small it will provide some warmth, especially inside a tent. Solo stove works by putting wood in the bottom so it will provide some warmth.
It comes in handy when you are camping or backpacking in cold temperatures when you need to warm your hands and have a warm element in your tent to have a good night’s sleep.
However, don’t expect that it will keep you warm all night as the twigs can’t provide warmth for the whole night.
Is Solo Stove Lite worth it?
If you are going backpacking alone or with another person this might be the right stove for you.
The Solo Stove Lite model is environment-friendly, durable, portable, creates warmth and a good ambiance, produces little smoke, and performs well in wind.
It is made of stainless steel that won’t rust and is easy to clean. You won’t need to carry fuel with you as you will just pick some twigs to get a fire starting. It boils water in 8-10 minutes.
No matter of the higher price and weight factor (0.90 lbs.) it is one of the best wood burning backpacking stoves for the money.
Can you use charcoal in a solo stove?
The company doesn’t recommend using charcoal on their camp stoves because the coals can damage the grate. It is better that you use natural fuel from the woods as chunk wood and twigs as the main source of fuel.
How do you put out a fire in a solo stove?
The best thing to do is to stop adding the firewood and let the fire gets off by itself. In case of emergency or when you are in a hurry you can also turn it on a side so the fire source will fall out. Beware, the cooker will be very hot!
What stove to get for backpacking?
When going backpacking or hiking you should get a small, foldable and portable model that won’t be too heavy.
What will you cook?
The other question that you must ask yourself is what type of food do you want to prepare on it. If you want basic meals like soups and fried eggs you won’t need the one that has a grilling grate included in the package.
Fuel type stove
Consider fuel type. Stoves that run on wood fuel are eco-friendly and will cost you nothing as you won’t need to buy gas tanks or alcohol. It is easy to pick some branches, twigs, and leaves in the nearest woods to start a cooking fire.
Most backpacking stoves come in stainless steel material that is heat-resistant and durable.
Solo cookers are known to be made of 304 stainless steel that is the most common stainless steel material. It is more corrosion-resistant than ordinary steel.
Always look for a product that won’t rust and that will bear high temperatures and avoid cheap models that won’t last long.
Want usable electricity while cooking?
Some wood stoves for backpacking as BioLite Campstove 2+ have the option to generate electricity by cooking.
The electricity will generate due to the heat of burning twigs. Just insert a USB cable into the cooking device and you will be able to charge your favorite gadgets.
What is the most efficient wood-burning backpacking stove on the market?
